Missing Stem

One part disappears. Can you hear which one?

Listen, compare, reveal

Hear the full reference groove first. Then play the version with one part muted and choose the missing instrument. You can replay both versions; the challenge is about this reference, not a judgment of your taste.

A stem is a separate instrument part. Hearing the kick, bass, hats and harmonic parts together, then apart, makes their roles easier to notice. The reveal returns the missing part to its musical context.

Short challenges, original material

The challenges use curated, pre-made TunePal audio from House, Techno and Hip-Hop sessions. Nothing is generated live, and playing does not spend credits. This is a finite set you can replay, not a promise of a new song every day.

Some parts are easier to distinguish with headphones, especially low bass. Play at a comfortable level. Feedback describes the part removed in this game; it does not measure your hearing or musical ability.

Keep exploring after the answer

Use the reference to hear how the parts work together, or try another challenge. A shared challenge link points to a fixed challenge, so a friend can play the same reference instead of being sent to a different daily puzzle.

If listening is not useful for you, the related visual lessons offer other ways to explore rhythm and arrangement. TunePal’s app lets you create new instrument parts; this game does not transfer a project into it.

Common questions

What is a stem in music?

Here it means a separate instrument part, such as kick, bass or pad, that can be heard within the whole groove or on its own.

Is there only one correct answer?

The scored question asks which part was actually muted from a specific reference. It does not decide which creative combination sounds best.

Do I need an account or a daily streak?
